Dental prosthetics replaces what a tooth has lost, or a whole tooth that is gone: with a crown, a bridge, a denture or teeth on implants. A well-made ceramic crown lasts 10–15 years and more, and at our clinic you get it in two to three visits.
Who it is for
- A tooth with a large filling or after root canal treatment, which could fracture without a crown.
- A broken, heavily worn or darkly discoloured tooth that a filling can no longer save.
- A gap after one or more lost teeth, closed with a bridge or a crown on an implant.
- Many missing teeth or a toothless jaw: a partial or full denture, or fixed teeth on implants.
- Cosmetic corrections of the front teeth with thin ceramic veneers.
- With caution: untreated gum disease (periodontitis) is treated first, otherwise no prosthetic work lasts. Heavy grinding calls for a stronger material and a night guard. A bridge requires grinding down the neighbouring teeth, so an implant is often the better choice if they are healthy.
How it works
- First visit (50 € with a panoramic X-ray, 80 € with 3D CBCT): examination, imaging, a discussion of the options and a written, non-binding treatment plan with the final price. About 45 minutes.
- Preparing the tooth: under local anaesthesia the tooth is shaped; if needed it is first repaired or root-canal treated. The impression is taken digitally with an intraoral scanner, no impression paste. You wear a temporary crown until the next visit. 60–90 minutes.
- Laboratory work: our regular laboratory partner makes the crown from zirconia, e.max ceramic or metal-ceramic, depending on the tooth position and what we agreed. Usually 7–10 days.
- Fitting: we check the fit, shade and bite and cement the crown permanently. For demanding shades on front teeth there is a try-in in between, making it three visits. 30–45 minutes.
- Dentures take more visits, usually four to five: impressions, bite registration, wax try-in, delivery and an adjustment after a few days of wear. For teeth on implants, the prosthetic phase starts once the implant has healed in, after 3–6 months.

Bridges and dentures are priced per case: a bridge by the number of units (each unit costs about as much as one crown), a denture by type and material. You receive the written treatment plan with the final price at the first visit (50 € with a panoramic X-ray, 80 € with 3D CBCT). For larger treatments above roughly 1,000 € interest-free instalments via Leanpay are available, up to 24 months. The Slovenian health insurance ZZZS does not cover implants; part of dental costs may qualify for tax relief, but check the current rules of the Slovenian tax authority FURS or of your home country.
After the treatment
After shaping, the tooth may be sensitive to cold for a day or two; after cementation you get used to the new crown within a few days. If the bite feels off, come in; the adjustment takes a few minutes. Clean the crown like your own tooth: brush twice a day, floss or interdental brushes along the crown margin, where plaque collects first. With regular cleaning and a check-up once a year a ceramic crown lasts 10–15 years, often longer. A bridge lasts about as long. Dentures need relining every few years as the bone shrinks and replacement after 7–10 years.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a dental crown cost?
A ceramic crown costs 250–390 €, depending on the material and the position of the tooth. The same price applies to a crown on an implant, without the implant. The price of a bridge or denture is set in the written plan at the first visit.
Zirconia, e.max or metal-ceramic?
Zirconia is the strongest and is chosen for molars and bridges. e.max ceramic is the most translucent and therefore the first choice for front teeth. A metal-ceramic crown is proven and cheaper, but as the gum recedes a dark margin can show over time.
Does shaping the tooth hurt?
No. We work under local anaesthesia; you feel only vibration. Afterwards the tooth may be sensitive to cold for a few days, which passes on its own.
Bridge or implant?
A bridge is faster and needs no surgery, but the neighbouring teeth have to be ground down. An implant preserves the neighbouring teeth and the bone, but needs 3–6 months of healing. If the neighbouring teeth are healthy, in my practice I recommend an implant; if they already carry crowns, a bridge is a perfectly reasonable choice. Anyone who prefers no metal in the mouth can choose a ceramic (zirconia) implant, which typically costs 300–500 € more than titanium.
Does insurance cover prosthetics?
We are not a contracted provider of the Slovenian health insurance ZZZS, so all services are self-paid. The advantage is no waiting for prosthetic work and a free choice of materials. Whether your insurer at home reimburses part of the cost is best checked in advance with our written estimate.
How long does a crown last?
With good hygiene and annual check-ups 10–15 years, often longer. The most common reason for replacement is not the crown itself but decay at its margin or receding gums, both of which a regular check-up catches in time.
